Do I need a visa to study in Australia?

Yes. You can be granted a student visa only if you wish to undertake a registered course or part of a registered course on a full-time basis. A registered course is an education or training course offered by an Australian education provider who is registered with the Australian Government to offer courses to overseas students.

To be granted a student visa you must complete a visa application form, lodge it with the evidence required, pay the application charge and satisfy the student visa requirements.

How much does it cost to study in Australia?

An Australian Government survey showed that in terms of total costs—including tuition fees and living expense—Australia was consistently less expensive than the USA and UK. Tuition fees will vary depending on the course. Tuition fees range from AUD6,000 to 7,000 for a six-month graduate certificate course to overAUD30,000 per annum for a medical degree. Most full time degrees and postgraduate degrees cost between AUD10,000 to 20,000 per annum.

Are scholarships available?

Yes. Scholarships are available for international students however, most are offered for postgraduate study in universities. A majority of international students in Australia are full-fee paying students and is not awarded scholarships. Postgraduate scholarships are highly competitive and only awarded if the candidate has an excellent academic background, scholarly publications and excellent English proficiency.

What are the entry requirements to study at Australian institutions?

Students must meet minimum academic requirements and need a sufficient level of English language proficiency (IELTS) for entry to Australian education and training institutions. Institutions will assess whether you meet the selection criteria set for your proposed course of study. They will look at the level and content of the study you have completed in Australia or your home country. For postgraduate students, letters of recommendation and sample of writing may be required. If you are a research student, you should discuss your research interest with your nominated supervisor prior to the lodgment of your application.

Can I work in Australia while I study?

Yes. International students are allowed to work twenty hours per week when the school is in session whereas they are allowed to work fulltime during vacations. You may also be eligible for student loans at Australian universities. However, you should check your visa conditions before you accept any employment.
